Reducing Snoring

Snoring is a condition faced by millions of people all over the world. The blockage of airflow in a person’s airways causes the soft palate to flap and thus creating the sound of snoring. The snoring sound is therefore a result of the vibration of the uvula and the soft palate. Snoring occurs while a person is asleep and although affecting a lot of people, its loudness differs for every individual.

In general terms, snoring occurs due to a blockage in the throat. However, there are various causes to partial throat blockage. Some of these causes include mucus accumulation in the throat, fat deposits around the throat, allergies, wrong jaw positioning or the closing of jaws in sleep, and the collapsing of the tongue to the back of the throat.

Snoring can affect people of all ages regardless of gender. And though considered as a largely social problem, snoring is also a serious medical issue. Aside from disrupting the sleep of those who sleep with you, it also disturbs your own sleep. This is the reason why most snorers feel weak after sleeping at night.

Those who experience serious snoring problems should consult their doctors because if untreated, it can lead to more serious conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, or the cessation of breathing during sleep. This is just proof that snoring can indeed be treated. A medical examination is necessary for proper diagnosis. A doctor will check if snoring is caused by inflamed tonsils, throat infections, or allergies. If not, he will move on to see if it is caused by your lifestyle patterns or if it is due to weight issues.

Treatments for snorers depend on the severity of the condition. Heavy snorers can choose to undergo a surgical procedure to minimize or totally eliminate their snoring. This should be the last option to take. Mild snorers have it easier because all they need to do to reduce their snoring is to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating right and indulging in regular exercise.

Mild snorers should also strive to lose excess weight and avoid taking tranquilizers and sleeping pills before going to sleep. They should also refrain from consuming alcohol before bedtime. Having a regular sleeping pattern also helps in reducing snoring. Likewise, sleeping on the side greatly helps in reducing snoring.

Aside from these ways to reduce snoring, it is also recommended if mouth, jaw, and throat exercises are done on a regular basis. When you exercise these parts regularly, the airways become broader and thus the likeliness of obstruction becomes lesser. You can also indulge in yoga and singing to reduce snoring.

These tips to reduce snoring can help if you make an active commitment to do it. Even if snoring is accepted as a normal occurrence, you still have to watch out for yourself. Because of the possible complications of snoring, especially if you are overweight, you need to be very vigilant about your condition.

If you don’t snore but someone close to you does, then be the guiding light and inform him or her of the possible medical effects of his or her condition. Snoring is a condition which should not be taken lightly as it can be detrimental to one’s health in the long run.
