Snoring Mouth Exercises

The people whose sleep gets interrupted by the snorers around them often wonder why a simple change of position does the trick of stopping the snoring. This leads to the question, “Does mouth exercises help in reducing snoring?” The answer to this question is a definite yes.

There are various exercises that can help you reduce snoring. The reason why these exercises help is that the structure of your mouth allows it. When a person snores, it is caused by the floppiness of the soft palate during the night. The soft palate can be likened to the curtains in your house’s window. When air enters the window, you can hear the curtains flutter. This is the same thing that happens when you snore. When air enters your airway and reaches the area where the soft palate becomes floppy, it flutters and creates the sound we know as snoring. Another occasion where snoring occurs is when your tongue rolls back against your windpipes.

To decrease the fluttering of your soft palate, all you have to do is to stiffen them up. These parts are simply muscles which you can stiffen up through exercise just like any other muscle in your body. As people get older, muscles get flabbier and this is the reason why adults snore more than children. Other contributors to snoring are the kind of food you eat and the lifestyle you lead.

But it’s a good thing that there are exercises specially designed for exercising your inner mouth. At first, you might find some of these exercises silly but in the end, these exercises will help you reduce snoring. These exercises are similar to those used by singers warming up and are targeted at the muscles found in your mouth, throat, and tongue. Doing this exercises will help your muscles attain a certain position at night.

The first mouth exercise you can do is the “Felix Unger exercise”. Felix Unger is a character from the TV Series the Odd Couple. When you say Felix, you can feel your tongue go back and then go forward. Unger on the other hand allows the muscles in your throat to flex. Say ‘Felix Unger” 20 times 2 hours before bedtime to workout your throat muscles. Do this every other day because muscles can get strained if overworked.

The second mouth exercise you can use is the “Uh-oh exercise”. Say the phrase 20 times every other night 2 hours before bedtime to exercise your throat muscles and stop snoring.

The third mouth exercise is to use a phrase commonly used by actors, “The lips, the teeth, and the tip of the tongue”. Actors use this phrase to exercise their vocal cords and you can make use of this to help you reduce snoring. You should say this phrase 10 times 2 hours before going to bed.

These are just some of the snoring mouth exercises you can use to reduce snoring. Just remember the reasoning behind these snoring mouth exercises – your throat muscles need to stiffen up to avoid blockage in your airways while you sleep.
